Marco Island Center for the Arts awards aspiring student artists

Marco Island Center for the Arts has announced the winners of its longstanding awards program for Collier County high school junior and senior aspiring artists. Since it was established in 1983, the scholarship program has distributed more than $200,000. Funding comes from private donations.

Scholarship money is given to the winning seniors, while junior merit winners receive $250. Honorable mention winners receive gift cards.

This year $3,400 was awarded to 10 winners from among 31 entrants in the competition. Judging was based on an individual art piece for its quality, technique and originality. Judges were Sandy Moore Howe, Tara O’Neill and Phyllis Pransky.

The 2017 senior scholarship winners are:

¦ Sabidio Borgela, Palmetto Ridge High School, the Glen and LaVonne Johnson Award of $1,000.

¦ Erika Acevedo, Naples High School, the Emil and Gail Fischer Award of $750.

¦ Taylor Carson, Naples High School, $500.

¦ Brittany Nguyen, Barron Collier High School, a $100 gift card for honorable mention.

¦ Cassandra Southwick, Palmetto Ridge High School, a $100 gift card for honorable mention.

The 2017 junior merit award winners are:

¦ Monica Garcia, Palmetto Ridge High School, first place, $250.

¦ Jewel Hovland, Naples High School, second place, $250.

¦ Madison Szittai, Naples High School, third place, $250.

¦ Diana Garcia, Palmetto Ridge High School, a $100 gift card for honorable mention.

¦ Alyssa Yzaguirre, Palmetto Ridge High School, a $100 gift card for honorable mention.
