Twelve local students competed in the recent Chess K-12 on Marco Island tournament at the Marco Island Library. After four rounds, there was a first-place tie between 10th grader Michael Curiale of Lely High School and fifth-grader Alex Sousa of Tommie Barfield Elementary School. Third place saw a tie between fifth-grader Tyler Mastrangelo and first-grader Charles Haunschild, both of Tommie Barfield Elementary School. Every competitor received a chess medallion from instructor/coach Wade Keller.
