Collier County emerging leaders can visit www.napleschamber.org/ alc to apply or find answers to frequently asked questions about the program. The selection committee, comprised of Leadership Collier Foundation Alumni, strives to create a diverse class of approximately 42 individuals.

Through hands-on experiences and exclusive behind-thescenes sessions, participants explore local government, education, economic development, the arts, and more. Class members will also hear from experienced area leaders who deal with our community’s biggest opportunities and challenges. With the benefit of new perspectives and connections, participants are prepared to take their places as our community’s next generation of community leaders.

This program runs from Feb. 21 – April 19, and includes nine, 2.5-hour sessions, typically from 3–5:30 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons.

Youth encouraged to join 4-H, learn leadership

Since 1902, 4-H has been creating an educational atmosphere for learning. Now, a new 4-H year is here. If you are 5 to 18 years old as of Sept. 1, you’re eligible for 4-H programing. UF/IFAS Extension Collier County 4-H will host an enrollment day (open house), from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 28, at the Extension office, 14700 Immokalee Road, Naples.

There is a $20 registration fee paid annually for each youth that gets involved. Of that fee, $10, comes right back to the county for programing cost. The other $10 stays with Florida 4-H to cover state programing. At this free event, see the variety of curriculum that 4-H offers youth and for leaders wishing to volunteer.

4-H is the largest youth development program in the United States. The 4-H Youth Development Program is the only national organization that is federally mandated to conduct positive youth development programs. The program works to improve knowledge and skills of young people (their heads, hearts, hands, and health, the four “h’s” in 4H) and the quality of life in the communities in which they live.

Tish Roland is the 4-H agent for UF/IFAS Extension Collier County. For information, contact her at troland@ufl.edu.

Collier Domestic Animal Services to host adoption event

Currently, nearly 500 animals at Collier County Domestic Animal Services are waiting to be adopted. DAS, located at 7610 Davis Boulevard, Naples, is hosting an adoption event on Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20. Partnering with the Collier County Sheriff’s Department and WAWA, the carnival-themed event will feature food, games, prizes, and a unique opportunity to meet and adopt the cats, dogs, and rabbits in need of a permanent home.

DAS encourages anyone considering adopting a new pet to visit the facility where the perfect pet is waiting for you. All adoptions are $10 during the event and throughout August. Each animal is spayed or neutered, vaccinated against rabies and microchipped. Cats and kittens are offered as adopt one, get a second one at no additional cost. Collier County Domestic Animal Services is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

Collier County Domestic Animal Services is facing the same conditions as the rest of the country — more animals are arriving and fewer are leaving. Foster families help remove some of the shelter’s pressure by temporarily taking animals into their homes but are not a permanent solution for the homeless animals in our community.
