Gulfshore Playhouse kicks off a new season of professional theater with “An Iliad,” a modern retelling of Homer’s soaring epic, running Oct. 20-Nov. 4 at The Norris Center in Naples.

In the one-man play Lisa Peterson and Denis O’Hare, an embattled storyteller grapples with the timeless tale of “The Iliad” about the horrors and heroism of war in Ancient Greece. With intimacy and immediacy, the new work shines a light on how Homer’s poem rings true today.

Broadway veteran and Gulfshore Playhouse Associate Artistic Director Jeffrey Binder brings to life the stories of Achilles, Hector and Agamemnon.

“An Iliad” is directed by Kristen Coury, Gulfshore Playhouse founding producing artistic director. The production staff includes Emily Hauger, stage manager; Michael Cassara, casting director; John Patrick, vocal coach; Jennifer Bronsted, costume designer; Jimmy Lawlor, lighting designer; David Arsenault, scenic designer; and Beth Lake, sound designer.

Mr. Binder’s New York credits include 10 years as Zazu in “The Lion King” and George Banks in the musical “Mary Poppins,” both performed at the New Amsterdam Theater on 42nd Street. He has also appeared in numerous Gulfshore Playhouse productions, including “The Mystery of Irma Vep,” “Merchant of Venice,” “Hound of the Baskervilles,” “My Fair Lady” and “An Enemy of the People.”
